We have been discussing for several months about the technology that allows to turn the screen of a mobile device into a precision scale for small items. Until a few weeks ago, professionals from the sector believed that Apple would have introduced this function with the next iPad.
However, Huawei anticipated Apple by introducing Huawei Mate S in occasion of IFA – Technology Show, which took place in Berlin from September 4 to 9. This smartphone screen, 5.5 inches, is able to accurately weigh small items weighing between 100 and 400 grams.
The Force Touch introduced by Huawei does not just turn the smartphone into a small portable scale, it can also associate specific functions to different kind of pressure on the screen.
Its screen shows also an interesting innovation concerning the unlock functions. In fact, besides the fingerprint reader on the backside, with Mate S it is possible to unlock the phone via gesture recognition and contact with knuckles.
Therefore, several interesting features for a smartphone that has been introduced as a flagship: Octa core processor (4*2.2GHz + 4*1.5GHz), 3GB of RAM and three microphones that can pick up the point of origin of the sound. All wrapped into an elegant metal body that enhances the clean design of the device.
At the same time, according to the people who tested the device at IFA, the smartphone shows some weakness points we didn’t expect on a flagship device. According to them, compared with the ones made with the flagship devices of the main competitors (especially LG and Samsumg), the videos and photos shooted with the Mate S’ 13Mpx front camera haven’t a good quality.
Another Mate S’ problem is related to the battery life: the device battery is a 2700 mAh: worse than the Mate 7’s one (the Mate 7 is a one year old device of the same producer, that has a 4100 mAh battery). Anyway, the Mate S’ battery still work enough for a daily use, especially if you can give it a fast charge with the Eggtronic HUB IT.
To Huawei, that in the 2015 Q2 has turned the third smartphone producer worldwide, Mate S represent an opportunity to increase its present in the top level smartphone market share.
The phone will be available for pre order starting September 15 with the standard edition (32 GB at 649 and 64 GB at 699 euros). The 128 GB version with Force Touch screen is still unpriced. Mate S is an innovative and well-performing smartphone, but its price could obstruct its trade. For the same price, and in some cases for something less, we can get the flagship smartphones of Huawei competitors. The customers could prefer these ones because of their producer experience, especially if the criticisms about the Mate S camera and battery life will be confirmed by the early adopters.
